A letter from Delaney Hall The slides below are published by PIRC about ICE activity in the state last week continue to flag an increase in ICE arrests in the state. We have seen several arrests here in Lane County as well. As indicated on the second slide, there is a trend of detentions immediately following an interaction with local law enforcement, these have been less the random dragnet-style arrests we were seeing in the state last year. If you, a friend, or a loved one with precarious immigration status has an interaction with local law enforcement, check in ASAP with the immigration attorney handling the case. ICE detainees are organizing and fighting back all around the country, with 500+ ICE prisoners on hunger strike over the last week in at least 5 locations around the country! Hunger strikers' demands are attached in the fourth slide: A meeting with the governor, the release of medical vulnerable prisoners, the release of young and elderly detainees, and their own freedom. Reports indicate that many medically vulnerable prisoners have been released in response to the strike. Meanwhile daily and nightly protests have been ongoing outside of the facility, protests that have taken on a mass character including families of those detained. Those protests have faced sharp repression first from DHS/ICE and other facility security, and subsequently from state and local police. This has caused the protests to swell in response, and today there are indications that the rebellion may lead to the city of Newark filing a lawsuit for the closure of the Delaney Hall facility. A report back from a local woman who has been attending the protests while visiting family nearby: "Protesters were blamed and were attacked with tear gas, rubber bullets and horse mounted state police to move them very far away from entrances to detention center. Also mayor of Newark has instituted immediate curfew within 1 mile radius of detention center. Reporter had knee broken by mounted police- the horses. All protesters did was toss back tear gas canisters when possible. So far as I can tell, NJ State is allied with ice in massive attempt to totally shut this peaceful protest down. There were medics tents and tents for visiting families of detainees and port a potties there for months and I’m not otg yet but I think all been removed or destroyed. Including megaphones."
