La Union de Secuestrados por ICE (USI), the Union of People Kidnapped by ICE, was officially formed on April 5, 2026 in the North West Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, WA. You can read their full statement (pictured above), written by one of the Union’s leaders, Rogelio Bolufé. Bolufé, along with other individuals detained at the Tacoma concentration camp, organized a hunger strike in May 2026. More than 200 detainees were to participate. But Bolufé and other USI leaders were disappeared by ICE hours after the strike began. Their sudden transfers led many participants to abandon the strike, fearing retaliation. The whereabouts of Bolufé and other USI leaders are still unknown. Hunger strikes are forming in concentrations camps across the country in Washington, California, Texas, New Mexico, New Jersey, and likely many other unknown places. Mora-Cheung, the director of organizing at La Resistencia, says the wave of hunger strikes appears to be spontaneous and not nationally coordinated. Their increasing frequency is likely a response to worsening conditions in detention centers, particularly those run for profit by the private company GEO, under this administration.
