FOOD emergency

One in six Oregonians benefit from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Federal funding for this program is going to end on October 31 if the government shutdown continues. (ARTICLE)

if your neighbor was hungry, what would you do?

As the government shutdown continues, this fascist regime has decided it is willing to allow Oregonians to go hungry.

This fascist regime is relentless and has its sights set on the states that it deems “The Enemy.” Oregon is one of those states.

Not only are they needlessly sending troops to Portland, they’re now willing to withhold food from Oregonians. They are willing to let Oregonians go hungry.

But we know:

EUGENE. SPRINGFIELD. TOGETHER. STRONG.

These fascists are going after our food assistance program. They want to starve the poorest among us. They want to starve the elderly, the young, and the disabled who, together, make up half of those who receive SNAP benefits.

Here’s what you can do:

1) Donate to and/or volunteer for Food for Lane County where all food pantries remain open to anyone who needs it regardless of immigration status, identity, etc.

2) Donate to and/or volunteer at Burrito Brigade .

They manage 55 little free pantries (LFP) around Lane County. Anyone can take or donate food. There’s a map, too!

Burrito Brigade also manages Waste to Taste, a by-appointment grocery store or food box, where everything is free. It is all food that is still good but, because our food system is broken, would have been thrown into the landfill.

3) The Relief Nursery has a RIDICULOUS number of food resources in this Community Resource Guide.

4) Donate to and/or volunteer for Community Supported Shelters. They not only provide shelter for our unhoused, they also provide food.

From Anna Alkin, Program Manager:

“Our hope, once SNAP benefits are suspended due to the government shutdown in November (and work requirements for SNAP begin—also this November), is that we can provide meals to unhoused folks at the Access Center (AC) Tuesday-Friday at 2 pm: soups, sandwiches, or other ready-to-eat food. The AC is located at 1845 W 11th Ave.

We can’t cook on a daily basis without a restaurant or food truck permit, but we can serve donated food prepared elsewhere so long as those making the food have a food handlers card ($10) and they fill out a short form documenting where the food items were sourced (Fred Meyer, Food For Lane County,  a farm, etc).

The hope is that we can find organizations, groups, or ambitious individuals to make food for about 50 people on a weekly basis. And if a weekly feed is too much to ask, but a monthly donation would be doable, we would be delighted to partner with them!
